Retainer Instructions

  • Retainers should be worn at all times as much as possible until otherwise instructed by the Doctor
  • Retainers should be removed for meals, but always remember to put it back in the case! It is very common for people to throw their retainers away with a cafeteria lunch tray or leave them on a plate at a restaurant. At our office we have a saying: “In the face or in the case!”
  • Clean your retainer daily with a toothbrush and toothpaste. Use warm but not hot water to avoid warping the acrylic material. Brushing your retainers will remove plaque and odors. Be sure to ask our team for suggestions on what brands of appliance cleaners can be used safely with retainers.
  • It might be hard to speak when you first receive your retainers. The tongue is a very strong muscle and will learn how to manage quickly. Practicing reading or singing aloud can help make the learning curve go faster!
  • Retainers should be treated with the highest level of care. If it gets lost or broken, call our office immediately.
  • Do not try to adjust your retainer yourself, if you think it needs adjusting or you have any other questions then give our office a call.
  • Always bring your retainer to your appointments
  • Retainers should be kept away from hot water, hot car dashboards, and the washing machine. Any intense heat can warp the acrylic material.
