It’s no secret that consistent brushing and flossing during braces or Invisalign treatment is key to a successful result. After all our hard work and dedication, we really want that dazzling “Smile in Style”! But when oral hygiene takes a back seat, problems start to creep in and before we know it the gums can get inflamed or tiny white spots can show up on teeth surfaces. These are signs of an overgrowth of bad bacteria in the mouth, which can cause bad breath, gum bleeding and gingivitis, as well as enamel decalcification, possibly leading to cavities. But it’s not too late to take action and either get your smile healthy again, or better yet, prevent these problems in the first place. We recommend and offer these products in our office to help give your brushing routine a boost:

Crest® Gum Detoxify Toothpaste

Created after years of research by Crest scientists, Gum Detoxify toothpaste been specially formulated to target the millions of plaque bacteria around the gum line.

Crest Gum Detoxify Deep Clean uses a cooling activated foam to help penetrate hard to reach areas, finding and neutralizing harmful plaque bacteria around the gum line for clinically proven healthier gums. Ask for a sample at your next visit.

MI Paste

MI Paste is the only product available for professional use containing the active ingredient RECALDENT™, a special milk-derived protein that has a unique ability to release bio-available calcium and phosphate to tooth surfaces. When it comes to maintaining a healthy smile, these key ingredients can make a big difference in overall health. MI Paste can also help relieve tooth sensitivity. It is safe and easy-to-use, and it’s available in five delicious flavors: melon, mint, strawberry, tutti-frutti and vanilla. (In-office flavor availability varies.)

MI Paste is not toothpaste; it is a topical tooth cream that can be used safely multiple times daily or as directed by the orthodontist. It releases vital minerals into the mouth when and where needed. Because it has a milk-derived ingredient, MI Paste is not for people allergic to dairy.

Remin Pro

Remin Pro is a protective dental tooth cream similar to MI Paste, but unlike MI Paste it does not pose a risk for patients with milk allergies. It contains triple protection of fluoride, nano-hydroxyapatite (calcium and phosphate) and Xylitol. Nano-hydroxyapatite restores mineral balance and Xylitol inhibits the formation of dental cavities. In addition to strengthening and re-mineralizing the tooth surface, Remin Pro helps relieve sensitivity and neutralize acids. It can be applied easily with a finger or soft toothbrush and comes in three great tasting flavors: Melon, Mint and Strawberry. (In-office flavor availability varies.)

Platypus Flossers

These floss picks are specifically designed for patients with braces because they have a unique spatula end on them that allows you to get underneath the wire. We can provide you with some samples at your next visit, but they are not easy to find in stores. We recommend buying them in bulk on Amazon so you never run out!

Floss Threaders

If you prefer to use traditional floss instead of a floss pick, you can pick up floss threaders at most pharmacies. These threaders allow you to maneuver the floss like sewing thread between your wires and brackets. We can provide you with a sample at your next visit!

StaiNo Brushes

These “interdental” brushes are a proven and safe way to remove unwanted stains around your appliances. These do not replace brushing or flossing, but can be a great way to clean closer to your brackets than other cleaning methods. These are also a great way to remove unsightly food scraps from your post-lunch smile!

Travel Brush

Keeping a toothbrush with you wherever you go is an excellent suggestion for any orthodontic patient. It will never hurt to slip away and brush after meals to get any unwanted pieces of food out of your appliances. Food left in nooks and crannies will attract bacteria, which could lead to cavities.

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children begin seeing the orthodontist at age 7. In many cases, the Orthodontist may recommend “Phase I” or “Early Treatment” to address problems before all of the primary teeth have been lost. However, even if the patient is not ready for treatment at that time, it is a good age to meet the doctor and staff and create an ongoing relationship with the office.

Early orthodontic treatment is usually begun after the four front upper and lower permanent teeth have erupted, which typically happens between ages 7-9. The image below outlines certain issues that can be alleviated before they get worse:

Phase I treatment usually takes about 12 months. In some cases, patients can roll directly into comprehensive treatment on the top and bottom arches directly following Phase I. Other times, the Orthodontist may place a bonded retainer to keep things in place until comprehensive treatment is recommended.

If you have ever explored the possibility of pursuing orthodontic treatment for yourself or a child, you are likely aware that it is an investment in not only time, but financially as well.  At Dr. Richter’s office we are always trying to provide as many payment options as possible so that you can choose a plan that works best for you.  Last month we caught up with the current economic landscape and began offering online payments; a mere 24 years after Dan Kohn sold a copy of Sting’s Ten Summoner’s Tales to a friend in Philadelphia via his crude NetMarket website.  This month, we are announcing a new partner from the world of finance.  Let us introduce to you our friends from Lending Club!

Lending Club is a third party company that can assist you in financing orthodontic treatment for yourself or a child.  In many situations, the down payment is the biggest hurdle for families to begin treatment.  Lending Club has the ability to finance the entire treatment amount, and allow you to just begin making monthly payments.  They can also extend your repayment term for a lower monthly payment than we offer through our in-house financing options.  The best part about Lending Club, and something that sets them apart from their competitors, is that you have nothing to lose by applying.  Your credit score will not be affected by seeing if you qualify for the program.

We decided to partner with Lending Club because we believe they will do right by our patients.  The world of patient financing, and personal loans in general, is full of fly by night companies, baseless claims, and less than honest individuals.  After taking some time to get to know the people at Lending Club, we are confident that they and their partners will treat our patients with the same respect we do.  The link below will take you to our landing page on the Lending Club website.  From this page you can learn more about Lending Club and apply to see if you qualify.  As always, you can call Calvin at the front desk if you have further questions about how this program may work for your individual situation.

Because teeth can shift at any age, visiting the orthodontist can be important no matter how old or young you may be.  There are numerous reasons why teeth can be misaligned. It could be caused by a health condition or an injury or just the way your teeth grew naturally. Possibly you had straighter teeth in the past, but now have misaligned teeth.

And even if you had braces in the past, it doesn’t preclude you from needing them again. In many cases, people who wore braces in childhood or as a teenager discover they need them again when they are older. This might be a result of not wearing their retainer as they should or simply a change in natural growth of teeth. Research shows that orthodontia is needed in as many adults as children.

Ignoring your teeth can result in other health concerns such as headaches, stomach upsets and ear aches. With crooked teeth you can also experience an increase in plaque and food buildup between your teeth. That can lead to periodontal or gum disease. Keeping your teeth healthy can help you to avoid tooth decay, gum and bone loss, not to mention wear and tear on your enamel and chronic facial discomfort.

If you’re an adult in need of braces, don’t wait. Today it is easier and more affordable than ever to get braces that are barely noticeable.  And if you have a child at the age of six or seven, that it is the age that orthodontic problems start to become noticeable. Permanent teeth usually start to come in around this age.

We treat patients of all ages and encourage you to come see us. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children make their first to visit to the orthodontist at age seven to begin building a strong relationship with the doctor. But if you happen to be 37, 57, 67 or older, please come for a visit and find out how beautifully aligned teeth will give you something to smile about.

When it comes to selecting an orthodontist, you want to know you can trust the quality and integrity of the dentist. If you have complete confidence in your orthodontist’s expertise, the orthodontia experience will be rewarding and have quality, long-lasting results.

When it comes to selecting an orthodontist, you want to know you can trust the quality and integrity of the dentist. If you have complete confidence in your orthodontist’s expertise, the orthodontia experience will be rewarding and have quality, long-lasting results.

But how do you know what to look for to get this level of orthodontia care?

Since people of all ages may need an orthodontist at some point in their life, it’s important to look for a professional who treats patients of all ages. Another plus is an established practice that serves a community over many years. That means an orthodontist that other dentists know, trust and to whom they refer their own patients.

Look for an orthodontist with advanced technology skills. Certification and ongoing training in the latest techniques and procedures will assure you’re in the right hands.

Convenience is a time-saver for everyone so access to early morning or afternoon appointments that work with your school or work schedule are an added benefit. Access to an online website with an interactive patient portal gives you 24/7 convenience. Customized electronic appointment sent directly to you via e-mail or text message is a helpful advantage, too. If you’re fortunate enough to find an orthodontist that provides live answering service for emergency care, it will add an extra level of confidence.

If you need an orthodontist who is experienced in the treatment of craniofacial problems including cleft lip and palate, you can trust the expertise of a dental professional skilled at this level of competence.

And finally, last but by all means not least, look for an orthodontics practice that has a warm, approachable, and fun staff that will help you to feel at ease. In an environment where there is a family-friendly, comfortable waiting area with coffee bar, artwork, books, magazines, music, video games, toys and more, you and your family will never dread that trip to the dentist.

If it seems like a lot to expect from your orthodontist, think again. You’ll find all these things and more at Luba Richter Orthodontics.
